Welcome - Hand Warmers

Welcome to The Hook Up!

This is my first blog post so go easy on me. Let me just tell you a little bit about the group and what you will find on this blog. The Hook up is a weekly crochet group run by Creative Days at Washington's Tea Lounge every Thursday lunchtime. So far we are a small group and we're just starting out. It's great fun and we get to talk about local community issues and have a giggle at the same time. The group is open to anyone, beginner's and dab hands

The first week there were only two of us, me and Nicci who quickly got the hang of the treble crochet and made her first fingerless mittens in the first week. Each week I hope to post links to what we're making or actual patterns. I've not yet worked out how to add PDF files or anything yet but hopefully I will in the future.

Here's the pattern for our very first beginner's handwarmers. (shush don't tell anyone, they're just rectangle sewn up with a hole left for the thumb).

BASIC CROCHETED HAND WARMER

Beginner’s level

Hook size 4.5 – 5.5 (4.5 for double knit and 5.5 for Aran/Worsted)

Depending on whether you would like vertical textured stripes or horizontal you need to measure different areas of the hand.

Vertical

Measure from just below the wrist bone to jut beyond the first knuckles from the palm of your hand.

Make a chain of that length.

Horizontal

Measure the distance around the hand just above the thumb.

Make a chain of that length.

Basically, to make a simple hand warmer all you are going to do is crochet a rectangle the width around your hand and length of you hand to just below the wrist.

Using Double Crochet (UK terms) sc (US terms) crochet from the second chain in the hook all the way along. Ch 1 turn

Double Crochet along
Repeat until desired length/width

Double crochet will give a dense mitt, if you are after a looser texture try trebles. To add more texture only crochet in the back of the loops rather than through the whole loop.

Alternate stripes of double crochet and treble give a lovely texture.

Once the desired length is achieved simply finish off and  sew the edges together leaving about 2 – 3  inches for the thumb hole.
